After
reading the article published in The Atlantic, entitled “Muhammad Ali and
Vietnam” explain:
-
How
he reacted to being drafted in the war and how he justified his attitude (60 to
80 words)
He refused point-blank
to be sent to VN. He didn’t take a step forward as he was supposed to when his
name was called by a US military officer. He justified his attitude by
declaring that he was a conscientious objector. He said he didn’t hold a
grudge against the people of VN who contrary to white Americans never attacked
or humiliated him, they never looked down on him. He thus refused
to shoot innocent people for no reason.
To refuse point-blank
= refuser tout net
To hold a grudge
against = en vouloir à qqn
To look down on
someone (= to despise) = mépriser
Thus = ainsi
-
“the
personal” cost he paid for his attitude toward the war. (40 to 50 words)
He paid a heavy price for refusing to go to VN. For 3 years he
was not allowed to box in the US. In addition, he lost his World
Champion title (= he was stripped of his .. title). He nearly went to
jail and made a lot of enemies.
To pay a heavy price = payer un lourd tribu
In addition = de plus
He was stripped of = on lui a enlevé…
